On Monday, September 8, 2008, Ohio became one of the first states by statute to make a next of kin registry available through the Ohio BMV Website at www.ohiobmv.com Any holder of a valid Ohio drivers license, commercial drivers license, temporary permit or State of Ohio identification card will have the option of providing the name and information of a contact person they wish to be notified. This would occur in the event the individual is involved in a crash or emergency and is otherwise unable to communicate with the emergency personnel. They may do so online at www.ohio.bmv.gov or at any one of the 214 independently operated Deputy Registrar License Agencies located throughout Ohio. Ohioans will be able to provide next of kin information for up to two contacts online or through any deputy registrar. For those over 18, the contact person can be a nearby relative, friend or co-worker. Those under 18 are required to provide a parent or guardian for the primary contact. This secure database will only be accessible to BMV employees and law enforcement officials Getting eligible Ohio citizens to be part of this crucial database will allow law enforcement and emergency officials to more quickly contact a person's designated next of kin. |
